Speaker Series: Coastal Adaptation: Harnessing the Power of Nature to Protect People

Friends of the Bay continues its 2019 Speaker Series with a presentation on “Coastal Adaptation: Harnessing the Power of Nature to Protect People,” on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at Friends of the Bay (111 South Street, Oyster Bay). Dr. Alison Branco (Coastal Director, The Nature Conservancy New York) will discuss the effects of coastal flooding and what coastal homeowners should consider in preparation for it.
 
“Dr. Branco is an oceanographer who specializes in measuring and assessing human impacts on marine ecosystems. Prior to her role at The Nature Conservancy, Dr. Branco served as the Director of the Peconic Estuary Program. Prior to that, as Lead Oceanographer at WorleyParsons, in Western Australia, she led several projects to predict the impacts of dredging operations on temperate and tropical primary producer habitat. She developed monitoring and management programs for coastal developments, including ports, pipelines, and aquaculture operations. She also worked with the hydrodynamic modeling team to integrate light modeling into the impact prediction process. Alison has also worked in academia where she participated in numerous research projects involving the ecology of seagrass ecosystem including habitat mapping and ecological assessments of estuarine and tropical seagrass ecosystems under intense eutrophication pressure.”
